Long gone are the days of Thornton Varley's dressmakers so these lovely pieces are increasingly hard to find; especially in such wonderful condition.
First opened in Hull, U.K. during the 19th century, Thornton-Varley was described as "one of the finest and best equipped provincial stores in the country".
Stocking a wide array of goods including women's fashion, men's three-piece suits, to fabrics and accessories. People would travel far and wide to visit the department store. Heavy bombing during the Second World War forced the store to relocate to a temporary home at the Royal Institution on Albion Street which also housed part of the Hull Museum, part of the Hull Subscription Library, and the Hull Literary and Philosophical Society's lecture hall. A few relocations and refurbishments followed but Thornton-Varley soldiered on.
It became a limited company five years after the war and in 1953, the company was purchased by the giant Debenham organization.
