“Vera Maxwell (1901-1995) had her introduction into the fashion world was as a model. She studied tailoring in London and upon her return to New York worked as a designer for sportswear and coat firms. Vera Maxwell Originals opened in 1947 and she is considered one of the founders of the American “look” along with Cashin and McCardell. Maxwell received a Coty Special Award in 1951 and a Neiman-Marcus Award in 1955. She continued to design under her label until 1964.”
