true vintage early 1940's Pauline Trigeré soutache chambray jacket & skirt ensemble

the earliest Trigeré we've come across; possibly right after she left Hattie Carnegie? Beautiful construction and hand finished details.

beautiful worn together to a more dressy event and the skirt would be great to dress down with a vintage cropped tie top and sandals.

Pauline Trigeré was recognized early in her career as an innovator of cut and construction.

Departing from Paris and arriving in New York in 1936, she was convinced to remain in the United States by fellow designer Adele Simpson. She then went on to design for Ben Gershal and Hattie Carnegie before starting her own label in 1941.

Like Madeleine Vionnet, Chanel, and Lanvin, Trigère did not sketch her designs; she cut and draped fabric directly on models or mannequins.

In the 1940’s, Trigeré’s work was known to be inventive and she was among the first designers to use fabrics like cotton and wool in evening wear; this ensemble is a fine example of that work.

She won many prestigious fashion awards throughout her career and  Los Angeles Times' writer Bettijane Levine described the glamour of Trigère's clothing as: "They seem to lend stature or stage presence even to those who don't look commanding in some other designer's outfits. By virtue of their couture-type structure and tailoring, they make even average-height women look statuesque."
