Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895) started his career apprenticing at Swan & Edgar until he left London (at age 20) for Paris. There he worked for Gagelin et Opigez, a store that specialized in cloaks and shawls. He went on to open his own design house, Maison Worth, in 1874. By that time, he had become the couturier to the various courts in Europe --most notably, French Empress Eugenie.
Charles Frederick was succeeded at Maison Worth by his sons, then his grandsons. The house eventually merged with Paquin and the Worth name was bought by Sydney Massin.
